State Officer Updates (9-20-2017)

Kevin Kressley

My news today after surgery.  Arthritis in the knee. Cartilage wearing down and fragments were loose. Cleaned those up. Tear was significant and cleaned it up but more cartilage just rubbing on meniscus and it will continue to wear it down. He needs to take care of the knees and strengthen them, lose weight.  Otherwise future will be replacement but he will have same issues if that is ever done.   Off work till Monday.

Kent George

Kent George was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and has chosen to have it removed, and have radiation. His surgery is today, Sept 19th. Please pray they find NO cancer in his lymph nodes, then he will be clear.

If you wish to cheer him up while he is off for the next 4 weeks, you may send well wishes to....

Kent George

 1934 Mulberry St

 Waterloo, Ia 50703

UPDATE: Kent came through the surgery fine. Results back in a week....Keep the prayers coming!!! She also said Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers already sent.

Des Moines State Charity Night Update (9-14-2017)

UPDATE: From Julie Ervin: Sorry to disappoint everyone but the hot air balloon operator said the weather on Friday is not conducive to setting up, there will be no balloon at Des Moines Eagles on Friday .we will see you for the rest of the activities!

I am excited to let everyone know that on the evening  of the DM charity event (September 22), we will have a hot air balloon tethered on our property. It will be set up at around 4:00 pm.  For the measly little sum of $5.00 an individual or small group can get into the basket of the balloon and take a photo (bring your own camera) with the burner going .  I've seen one of these photos and it is a cool, once in a lifetime photo.

For some of us shorties, there will be a step ladder to assist getting in and out of the balloon.

There is a possibility (not yet confirmed) that we may be able to offer a chance to hover 100 feet over the ground in the balloon, for only $50.00.

WCR Skit (9-12-2017)

Iowa is to do the skit at WCR (after the banquet, I believe).  So we're going to try and include something for all four state presidents.  With that said, Aux members who want to participate by being one of the "Pink Ladies" bring a pair of black or denim capris, a pink shirt, white tennis shoes (or saddle shoes) and a scarf.  Any Aerie member that wants to help out - the biker look fro the movie "Grease" will work.  We're including Nebraska and the Grand Reps, too.

New device in Long Beach helps paralyzed veteran walk again (3-18-2017)

By    Marc Cota-Robles   |   Friday, March 17, 2017 10:35PM

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) --

Navy veteran Cedric Delong has been paralyzed for 33 years

after being hit by a car while bicycling in San Francisco.

A new axis skeleton device donated to the Veterans Affairs

Long Beach Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders Center is

helping Delong accomplish something he thought was

impossible.

The technology allows him to stand, take steps and regain

some form of independence.

"It is quite encouraging for me and I'm sure for many

veterans," Delong said.

Delong noted how times have changed in 33 years.

"There was very little hope that veterans and quadriplegics

and paraplegics would ever walk again. As a matter of fact,

my doctor told me I would never walk again at that time," Delong said.

Delong's physician said the device is life changing in many ways.

"It's nice to be able to stand up and look people in the eye and actually have the same type of interaction you might have otherwise," explained Dr. Alice Hon, a physician with the Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System.

The Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders Center received the $150,000 device from Soldier Strong and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The device is approved by the FDA for rehabilitation, which means that patients that use it must have some form of mobility.

"My hope is that overtime this device will become much easier to use and more widely available to everyone," Hon said.

Delong said the device, which he said makes him feel like Ironman, means the world to him and other veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries.

"What I'd like to say to them is that hope is on the way for you because the sky's the limit," Delong said.

ALL Volunteer Eagles Band

from Kevin "Woody" Woodyard

It's official, we have started the ball rolling on an all volunteer Iowa Eagles band that is going to make its debut in Shenandoah at their state charity night November 6th. If everything works out we will be able to bring this group together all over the state to help out clubs when they need entertainment but cannot really afford it for a big event. People helping People includes other Eagles!!

Thanks to Mike and Debbie Gilson

Thanks to the hard work of Mike and Debbie Gilson, my dream has turned into a reality and we will soon have a great resource for everyone to enjoy in the state of Iowa. We have drums, keyboards one lead guitarist, a sax player and a couple of local Shenandoah guitarists who may sit in with us. Most can also sing pretty good too. Sounds like we will have a mix of Country, Classic Rock and oldies for sure, and might even surprise you with some things you are not ready for.

We Still Need Help

Between the 3 of us we have collected a small group of musicians, but still need some help. we are looking for a Bass guitar player. We can also use some acoustic guitar players to fill in during breaks. So if you play, bring your guitar along, we will fit you in somewhere. If you play any other instrument and would like to participate, contact either my self or Mike and we can get you the details.

Iowa PVA

The Iowa Paralyzed Veterans of America (IPVA) is one of 34 chapters which represents their national organization, Paralyzed Veterans of America.  PVA is a Congressionally Chartered non-profit veterans service organization (like DAV, or American Legion), but their membership is limited to veterans of the United States Armed Forces who have suffered a spinal cord injury or received a diagnosis of disease affecting the spinal cord.  Iowa PVA relies solely on private donations and grants and receives no governmental funding.   Donations made to the Iowa Chapter are dedicated to assist in serving local area veterans.  The Iowa Chapter is proud to say that almost $.90 of every dollar donated is spent directly on our programs.  The administrative and overhead costs are very low.

National PVA provides the services of a National Service Officer to assist veterans in the processing of their claims through the Veterans Administration.  This service is provided at no charge to the veteran and can make every difference in the quality of life for our veterans and their families.  For example, veterans diagnosed with ALS used to wait months to have their claims reviewed and approved.  During this time of waiting, no financial assistance was provided.  Due to the rapid progression of this disease, the veteran would not be able to work and the veterans spouse and/or family would have to remain home to provide care to the veteran.  This would potentially bankrupt the family.  Additionally, most homes are limited in handicap accessibility.  And most people do not have a van with a wheelchair lift at their fingertips.  These families were left in a situation of not only being broke, but they could not move their ALS stricken veteran into and around their home and had no access to transportation.  All of this on top of the devastating terminal diagnosis.  PVA and the local National Service Office is exceptional in getting assistance to these veterans.  Locally, it is a matter of weeks rather than months in processing these claims.  Nationally, PVA has assisted in rewriting the directives on the processing of ALS veteran assistance.

As stated earlier, Iowa PVA runs solely on donations and grants and receives no governmental funds.  There success is heavily reliant on the kindness and generosity of their donors.

Presentation Statement from Kim Gould Executive Director Iowa PVA:

This brings me to the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders.  In late 2013, I was contacted by Mike Smith and Dale DeReus of the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders.  Mike and Dale advised me that their group would like to put on a fundraising campaign for Iowa PVA.  I of course, was all for that.  In 2014, the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders attempted to promote an event at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids  that coincided with our National Year End Trapshoot.  Unfortunately, that event was rained out but their spirits were not dampened and they held an event on the 4th of July 2014 at the Eagles Club in Cedar Rapids.  This event was small but still managed to raise $1500 for the Iowa Chapter.  We thought this was great…..the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders were not satisfied at all with that.  They almost immediately went to work planning the 2015 All American Bash.

The All American Bash started out with a motorcycle ride with 4 stops ending at the Cedar Rapids Veterans Memorial Building.  There was food, live music, silent auction, raffles, etc.  Our Board of Directors was in attendance as well as our National PVA Vice President Liaison Charles Brown.  It was a huge undertaking and a bigger success.  They solicited sponsorships including J&P Cycles out of Anamosa which covered appx. $2500 in anticipated expenses.  This allowed for all of the money raised to be donated directly to the Iowa Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.  This solo event raised $7500!

It is with great pleasure that we present the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders with the Keith M. Griggs Chapter Service Award.  Keith was Iowa PVA’s National Service Officer for many years until his retirement and death in 2011.  In addition to being a dedicated and professional advocate for veterans, he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast.  It is only fitting and proper that the Cedar Rapids Eagle Riders receive this award in Keith’s name which reads:

In recognition of your extensive fundraising efforts in support of the Iowa Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.  The All American Bash was a huge success and the funds raised will assist our chapter in providing vital services to our disabled veteran members.

Attention all members of the District Membership teams:

For those of you that will be attending the West Central Regional Conference next weekend, Iowa will present our membership theme on Saturday afternoon.

If you are attending, please wear your outfits - This also includes the Entertainment Tribe.  We will be presenting a shortened version of MSP Brenda's theme - similar to what we did at state convention.

Also, please plan on meeting 30 minutes before the afternoon session begins.

We will be doing a skit - jointly with the Nebraska State Auxiliary Membership team.  It will be fun, with a lot of ad-libbing.  The Nebraska Membership chairman - Cheri Bollig - will fill you in when we meet on Saturday afternoon.

I know that we will do 'Iowa Proud' - and I look forward to seeing all of you next weekend.

Thanks!

The Medicine Man

Debbie Gilson

To All District Membership Tribes:

There has been some confusion with the membership skits and entertainment at our zone meetings.  The Membership skits are something new this year and give your 'tribes' a chance to show-case our membership theme.  This was listed on the back of the membership program that was handed out at state convention.

This year, we are having each District do a five minute Membership skit during the Saturday afternoon meetings.  This is NOT the same as the entertainment during the Saturday evening banquet.

Below is a schedule for the MEMBERSHIP skits:

Fall W Zone - Des Moines - W Pott Tribe

Fall E Zone - Grinnell - Hawkeye Tribe

Spring W Zone - Council Bluffs - SE Lakes Tribe Spring E Zone - Clinton - 3 Rivers Tribe

The following is the schedule for ENTERTAINMENT during the banquet:

Fall W Zone - Des Moines - SE Lakes Tribe Fall E Zone - Grinnell - 3 Rivers Tribe Spring W Zone - Council Bluffs - W Pott Tribe Spring W Zone - Clinton - Hawkeye Tribe

I apologize for the confusion.  If you have any questions, feel free to get a hold of me at 319-241-9499 or just send me an email.

And remember to Make Good Medicine and keep up the great work that all of you do!!

This is a POST from Tess Catt’s facebook page on July 4th

Jesse Shane Brown, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, (son of Tony Brown, Idaho State Past President, Fraternal Order of Eagles) was diagnosed with Osteo-Sarcoma (bone cancer) at age 10. He lost his right leg below the knee due to that bout and now has a prosthetic leg.

9 years later he was diagnosed with metastasized sarcoma in his lungs – they removed the top lobe of his right lung. A year following that they found more cancer and removed the bottom lobe of the same lung.

Jesse’s 21st birthday was June 11th, 2018. He now has more tumors inside his chest cavity, and a large softball-sized tumor outside his ribcage under his right arm. He is currently receiving OPDIVO (immunotherapy) to incite his white blood cell to attack the cancer and he is receiving large amounts of painkillers. Jesse appreciates all help you can provide.G

Please continue to keep Jesse Shane Brown and his family and our dear friends Tony Brown and Tess Catt in your prayers. This young man has been through a lot but has never lost that beautiful smile.

Friday, July 27, prior to the exoskeleton presentation in Des Moines, IA, WCR President Larry Simpson was taken to the hospital emergency room for evaluation.  After testing in the ER, he was admitted to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA.  The CT scan showed signs of a stroke that happened sometime before this weekend.  The doctor told him Sunday the results of the MRI done Saturday, which showed he had another stroke recently - most likely sometime Thursday night or Friday morning.  The Doctor explained to him, too, that he is lucky to still be alive as this could have been a much more serious event. The stroke did not effect his speech or limbs, but he is somewhat confused due to damage on the left side of his brain.  However, Sunday he was doing much better and some things from this weekend are starting to come back to him,.

Larry is still in Iowa Methodist as they were going to do more testing tonight and Monday to see if surgery is an option should his arteries be blocked.  Please keep Larry & Carol in your thoughts & prayers.

So to perk him up and brighten his day, we are sure he'd like to hear from his Eagles brothers and sisters from Iowa & Nebraska.  Hoping he will be home later this week, please send cards to his home at:

He recovered and was released, however he has developed an infection and is back in the hospital as of this writing.

With Dale hurt and headed to the hospital, Shirley was trying to get the dogs in and got tangled up in leashes or chains and fell and broke her hip. She had surgery, was out in two days and is recovering very well.
